Every lens cell on this site is written from somewhere. We would rather tell you where than pretend the view from nowhere exists. This page is the short version of the convictions behind The Marshall Lens: what we believe, how we handle the hard passages, and the rules the writing keeps. If you want to know whether you can trust what you are reading here, start with this.
Three principles govern everything. Charismatic with a seatbelt: Spirit-filled conviction, always belted to the text. Call higher, not just call out: diagnosis is cheap, the invitation is the point. Fan, not expert: awe is the posture, and Scripture is the authority, not us.
We hold a high view of Scripture. It is true, it is coherent, and when it seems to disagree with itself or with an outside source, we lead with trust in the text and then show how the question is resolved. Outside sources such as Josephus are witnesses, not referees. A hard verse is not a mistaken one.
Scripture sets the terms, not culture. We read the culture by the Bible, never the reverse, and we try to do it as salt and light rather than as a wall. Where Scripture is clear, we are clear. Where it is genuinely grey, we are generous, we name the views believers hold, and we say which is which.
Who we are. Protestant, non-denominational, Spirit-filled. We lean Arminian with real respect for the Reformed tradition: both have things right and things wrong, and we would rather let the invitation of the text land than plant a flag. Where a passage teaches that God chooses and keeps, we say so plainly. Where it says "whoever believes," we mean it.
Salvation. Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, is the only way to the Father. Hell is real and eternal. Universalism is an error. We will name the minority views believers hold and we will not mock anyone, but we will not blur what the text says.
Baptism and the Spirit. Water baptism is by immersion, each person's own decision. On baptism in the Holy Spirit, believers read Acts differently, and we let the text speak for itself. The gifts and offices of Ephesians 4 and 1 Corinthians 12 to 14 are in operation today. We say that without hedging, and in the same breath we carry Paul's own tensions: order, love, testing, building up the body, and a flat refusal of any gift or office used to control people. God heals today and we pray expecting it; we do not blame the sick, and we do not sell outcomes. The enemy is real and defeated; we neither deny him nor give him the spotlight.
People. God's design for marriage is one man and one woman, stated plainly and with the same pastoral care we give every reader who arrives carrying a history. The ministry of women runs through both Testaments and we honor it; where the church reads the passages on leadership differently, we say so evenly. Israel and the Church have different origins, different paths through Scripture, and different destinies in the end times, and both are honored; in eternity with God the distinction no longer matters. We honor governing authority, obey God first, and belong to no party.
The end times. We do not set dates, ever, and we do not label ourselves with a framework. We name the views, honor what each gets right, and keep the hope.
Twelve lenses on every chapter, each with its own question. Every factual claim that needs a source has one, and every source was opened and checked before the chapter went live. If a chapter does not give a lens much to work with, that lens ships light and says so; we do not pad. Where a popular preaching point does not hold up to the evidence, we simply do not use it. Where a text is used by Jehovah's Witnesses or Latter-day Saints to teach something Scripture does not, we name the group and explain where the reading falls short, plainly and without contempt. When another tradition reads a verse differently in a way worth knowing, we say what they hold and what we hold.
The words of Jesus print in red. The translation is the World English Bible, and we never alter its wording. "We" is how we write, because we are reading this with you, not at you.
The full working document behind all of this, including the decisions log, is kept in the open in the project's repository. If you find something that is wrong, we want to know.
